Crowns and Bridges

Crowns or caps are a restoration that completely encircles or caps the tooth. Crowns are indicated when a large restoration threatens the longevity of the health of the tooth. Crowns are also needed when a tooth breaks or after you have had root canal treatment to preserve the tooth.

Dr. Davis offers different materials for crowns. Majority of crowns made by dentists in the Phoenix area are porcelain fused to metal crowns. These crowns have been used for a long time in dentistry. Porcelain fused to metal crowns have a metal coping with a porcelain top. The negatives of this type of crown is the difficulty to make them look like natural teeth and the unsightly shadow that you can see by your gums.

More contemporary materials that we offer at Medical Lake Family Dental are all porcelain crowns, which are beautiful restorations that closely match you teeth. Most the time you will not know which tooth has a crown on it. The great thing about all porcelain crowns is that they can be done in a single visit. There is no uncomfortable impression making or weeks with a temporary that keeps falling off while you are waiting for your crown. It also saves you time and not taking additional time off from work.

Traditionally, crown restorations take two visits to accomplish. The first visit is to prepare the tooth for the crown, make the impression or mold of the tooth and make a temporary crown. The second visit is approximately two weeks later when the crown is cemented or bonded to the tooth.
